We’d just made a note in the forums regarding the under-utilization of hemp seed oil as a carrier, and while it’s great for the skin, it’s also great for our mental and physical health when ingested — and new research confirms its anti-depressant effects.
While Bergamot essential oil is noted as the “number one anti-depressant” essential oil used aromatically (in a diffuser, or any way which allows you to enjoy its aroma), research just released concluded that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids — found in high levels in hemp seed oil — also produces a statistically significant improvement in depression symptoms.
This was a meta-analysis, a type of study which analyzes all other available data together, to see if the results are consistent. The study “Omega-3 for bipolar disorder: meta-analyses of use in mania and bipolar depression” was published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry this August. The researchers concluded: “The meta-analytic findings provide strong evidence that bipolar depressive symptoms may be improved by use of omega-3.”
Omega-3 fatty acids are know too for their anti-inflammatory activity. Hence, this makes hemp seed oil a great choice for aromatherapy skin care blends for care of eczema, psoriasis, and dry, irritated skin in general. Note that you SHOULD REFRIGERATE your hemp seed oil, or add a couple drops per ounce of rosemary antioxidant essential oil, to prevent the delicate omega-3’s from oxidizing.
There are a great many sources of omega-3 fatty acids, some claiming fish oil to be the best (though one need be cautious that the oil has been distilled so the mercury has been removed), others saying flax seed, or “krill oil” (from tiny shrimp).
And there are many that consider hemp seed oil to be the best vegetarian source of omega-3’s, as it also contains GLA (the important fatty acid in Evening Primrose and Borage Seed), and the highest level of polyunsaturated fatty acids of any known source. Further, its balance of the omega-3, 6, and 9 fatty acids are considered the “perfect” ratio for human health.
Flax seed oil is often recommended as an omega-3 source, but does not quite measure up in these ways. Flax SEEDS however, do have very positive health benefits due to their “lignans” — which are found in most (perhaps all) seeds humans typically eat — those in hemp seeds simply have not been researched as of yet for their health properties.
Interestingly, it has been noted that supplementation with hempseed oil can increase the rate of neuron development in the brain, and supplementation of hempseed AND virgin coconut oil doubled this rate of neuron growth.
One to two tablespoons daily of each of these oils may have a great many health benefits — and science really supports that at minimum, ingestion of a high quality omega-3 fatty acid source can brighten our emotional outlook.
Now if we can only get someone to fund a study with participants inhaling Bergamot essential oil while ingesting hempseed and coconut…we might really bring smiles to some faces 🙂Share Share
