Three Science-Supported Essential Oils for Boosting Your Memory!

The latest research shows these three essential oils are wonderful for memory, learning, retention and slow down the aging process of the brain. In fact, inhaling any one of these oils individually will have the same memory enhancing effect.

How Melissa, Basil & Rosemary Help
Improve Learning, Retention
&  Slow Down Neuro-degeneration

MELISSA

Melissa can improve Memory and Learning.  It’s now being recognized as potentially beneficial to those with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Melissa (Melissa officinalis L) smells so wonderful, it’s a treasured essential oil and often used to instantly pick up your mood. It’s traditionally used in treating neurologic disorders and has been identified as a memory-enhancing herb.

One study using Melissa, looked at memory and learning impairment. It found that groups treated with Melissa had improved memory and learning because of its ability to increase acetylcholine build-up in the brain.

The study concluded that Melissa can improve learning and memory in those afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and suggests Melissa can be used as a form of treatment for AD due to its ability to promote acetylcholine build-up in the brain.

Melissa possesses a cholinergic property, meaning it is able affect the parasympathetic nervous system (PN). The PN utilizes acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter) to elicit messages between cells of the brain and spinal cord. The PN includes both areas of the nervous system that control unconscious actions and stimulating the “flight or fight” response. Many times, the enzyme that prevents acetylcholine for use, is over activated and there is decreased stimulation to particular neurons in the brain that control learning and memory, leading to learning and memory impairment- a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.

Melissa is more commonly known as Lemon balm. Traditionally, Melissa has been used in Iranian traditional medicine to treat diseases of the spine, brain and nerves.  This includes anything from mood disorders like anxiety and depression, to learning and memory function.

BASIL

Basil (Ocimum basilicum) has wonderful benefits on memory.

Both Melissa and Basil possess anti-inflammatory molecules that demonstrate antioxidant properties, which are vital to slowing down the degenerative process of human nature.

Basil is best known for its ability to restore mental alertness, refresh the mind and help focus and concentration. It can also be used for headaches.

One study published in 2012, evaluated Basil treatment with regards to memory retention and retrieval. The results revealed that the groups treated with Basil had improved memory retention and retrieval that were statistically significant. This was attributed to the antioxidant properties in Basil which prevent free radical damage to brain cells that involve memory function.

Basil, of course is widely used as a culinary herb.

ROSEMARY

Rosemary (Rosemary officinalis) has long showed improvements in memory function.

1,8-cineole (a compound in Rosemary) has been identified as an agent potentially responsible for cognitive and mood performance.

Rosemary is an excellent choice to relieve mental fatigue, or stimulate mental activity. In a 2003 study, researchers found that of 144 test participants who inhaled Rosemary essential oil during an exam showed significantly higher cognitive function.

Another study one group was administered for 12 weeks at different doses in middle-aged subjects and compared to a non-treatment group. Groups treated with Rosemary had increased antioxidant activity with improved short-term memory.

The data suggests that due to the high antioxidant activity present in Rosemary, it may have a protective effect on brain cells, particularly the hippocampus. In addition, Melissa and Basil possess anti-inflammatory molecules that demonstrate antioxidant properties, which are vital to slowing down the degenerative process of human nature.

Often free radicals cause damage to healthy cells, signaling an inflammatory response that goes hand in hand with pain. Antioxidants are important because they pick up free radicals that injure healthy cells, causing inflammation.

IN CONCLUSION:

Melissa, Rosemary, and Basil are high in antioxidant molecules that help protect our brain cells from damage. So tuck a bottle in your purse or pocket of these three essential oils blended into a bottle and you may just ace that test, recall things more rapidly, or find your work less taxing, particularly after lunch.
