Here at Ananda Apothecary, we love receiving customer feedback and testimonials. We recently received one such call and were so deeply moved that we wanted to share this story with the rest of the Ananda community.
The Hillside Montessori School in Silverado, California offers early childhood development education for infants, toddlers, preschool, kindergarten and elementary school students. This is not just your average school, though. Montessori schools center their teaching around the student and take an approach that encompasses the entire individual — mentally, socially, and emotionally. At the Hillside Montessori School, they are committed to providing the warm and caring environment that every child needs as a foundation for learning. They do this on many levels, including the way that they nurture the classroom energy and environment the children arrive to.
We recently received a call to order replacement parts for the nebulizers the school had ordered 2 years ago from Ananda Apothecary and were delighted to hear that they use them daily in their classrooms. Each morning before the students arrive to class, the teachers run their nebulizers to give the students an energizing and air purifying boost of wonderful essential oils. This is such an incredible way to show attention to every detail of the student experience, including sensory effects and healthy air exposure first thing in the morning.
Here is a photo of their beautiful indoor environment and outside playground.
The Hillside Montessori School is very happy with the results from diffusing essential oils in its classrooms. They have noticed a reduction in flu and colds, as well as a heightened attention, engagement, and learning for the elementary school students.
Essential oils have many healing properties, but they are especially effective through air diffusion in promoting a healthy respiratory system, stimulating mental state, calming environment, relaxation for good sleep, and more. When children have different shades of mood, essential oils like Tangerine, Red Mandarin and Orange can be useful for balancing mood and even calming hyperactive or over-stimulated children.
We suggest keeping in mind ideal age levels in children for diffusing certain essential oils. For example, German Chamomile, Lavender, and Red Mandarin are safe even for children under 6 months of age. You can use the table below as a general guideline for diffusing oils at various age levels:
4 years and up: Lavender (steam distilled)
Note: in diffusers, for children ages 2 to 8, Pine, Spruce, Fir, Spearmint, and Cypress can be used as good alternatives to Eucalyptus or Peppermint for congestion. If you use an essential oil in a diffuser for children under 2 years of age, recommended oils are Jasmine Absolute (calming), and Ylang Ylang (relaxing).
Topical application: If applying the essential oils listed above on the skin, follow these suggestions:
Do not apply any essential oils directly to the skin for children under age 2.
For children age 2 to 6 years, use 0.25% dilution which is around 1 drop of essential oil per 10 mL (or 2 teaspoons) of carrier oil. Children in this age group have less sensitive skin and their immune systems are maturing, so it is fine to use topical application of essential oils if properly diluted.
For children over 6 years of age, use 1% dilution which is around 4 drops of essential oil per 10 mL (or 2 teaspoons) of carrier oil).
