What is the shelf life of your oils?

In general, citrus oils have the shortest shelf-life, followed by herbs and floral oils, then woods and resins, of which can become enhanced through time on the shelf. This is very general, and truthfully, as long as you take care of your essential oils by storing them properly, it’s not likely you’ll need to concern yourself about them losing potency.  For more extensive details on longevity and proper storage, see “An in depth look at shelf-life, and the best practices for storing your essential oils” for more information on keeping your oils the very best!

You have several varieties of an oil, which is best?

The oil with the greatest therapeutic value depends on your application, or your preference in aroma.  We carry five Eucalyptus varieties, for example. Each is very similar, yet slightly different. Plus, distillation methods can also impact therapeutic properties to some extent. In a nutshell: Although they all share some common therapeutic benefits, each different species has its own unique chemistry and therefore its own unique therapeutic applications. We do our best to break down the details on each page in the individual oil’s description to help you decide for yourself. But here’s a brief look below:

Let’s look at Eucalyptus globulus vs. Eucalyptus citriodora:
Eucalyptus citriodora is exceptionally high in Citronellal content, which makes for an excellent insect repellent and antimicrobial, whereas Eucalyptus globulus has a high cineol content and is therefore most commonly used medicinally to remedy coughs, colds and support the respiratory system.

To select the oil that is best for your therapeutic use, you can also look at its Latin botanical name and determine your needs. This requires you, as a user to know what you are looking for specifically.  The genus name (first name, uppercase) is always capitalized. It refers to the category of plants that are similar in botanical makeup.  The species name (second name, lowercase) identifies the exact plant within a specific genus. The species represents the characteristics of the plant, including leaf and flower structure, reproduction, and other characteristics within that family of plants.

Which distillation method produces the best oil?

As with the different varieties of each essential oil, the oils will have somewhat different therapeutic properties and aromas due to the different distillation methods.  You’ll find on each oil’s page, a description of the differences which will help you decide which is the best for your particular use or application. It’s best to consult with your practitioner to truly sort it out for your personal needs.

For example: Spice oils like Ginger, Cinnamon, and Clove seem to have a ‘more complete’ aromatic profile when produced by CO2 distillation. However, in the case of these oils, we offer both the steam distilled and CO2 varieties, as the oils are quite different therapeutically. The steam-distilled Ginger oil is used best for digestive issues, whereas the CO2 can used for its anti-inflammatory properties.  We offer both steam distilled and CO2 distilled Frankincense, Cinnamon, Ginger, German Chamomile, Coriander, Clove, and Juniper Berry oils (this list is continually growing).

Why is my order having processing issues?

Just because the order shows it is processing doesn’t mean the charge has been finalized. Our credit card/debit card processing company holds the amount of an order for 24-48 hours until the charge is verified and processed. It is basically holding a spot in line to become finalized. The number one issue that we run into with processing orders is that the address associated with the card is incorrect. Always double check that the billing address is correct this will not be caught by our system until 24-48 hours and is the main issue when duplicate processing amounts are observed. If you are having issues with this PLEASE call right away and do not try multiple purchases as those will show up as processing.

Where do your oils come from?

Our oils come from around the world, from some of the world’s finest distillers. You can easily determine the orgin of any essential oil both on the product label and in the oil description on our website. We have developed relationships with distillers whom we believe not only produce the finest essential oil of each variety, but whom do this consistently, from batch to batch, and year to year.

We do not produce our own oils, meaning, we do not have a farming or distillation operation. While some companies claim to produce their own oils, it is important to note that they actually produce only a very few of their own to which they have made that claim, but otherwise also work with distillers who make these oils.

What is the bottle quality of your essential oils?

We’ve gone the extra mile to make your essential oils retain their high quality and protect them from any deterioration once you receive your oils no matter how you store them.

While amber bottles are less expensive, we feel it’s important to offer you the best bottle with the most protection to help keep the exposure of UV rays to a minimum and in preserving your precious oils’ longevity.

The vast majority of our oils are shipped in beautiful deep cobalt blue glass bottles, and a few are in the Swiss made, deep violet Miron glass bottles. The Miron glass bottles essentially completely block all ultraviolet light rays from contacting your essential oils, for the exception of a very specific frequency of violet light that scientific research has shown to enhance the natural therapeutic potential of plant materials and extracts (including essential oils).  Do understand, that essential oils themselves do not become rancid, however, they can oxidize (so tightly close the lids), deteriorate and lose their beneficial therapeutic properties over time. Proper storage and handling will greatly benefit your purchase. The key here is to protect the contents from exposure to light and air.  For more tips on preservation, see our Using Essential Oils & Storage page and scroll down to the “Storing Essential Oils” section.

You will note: Our sample vials, 1.75mL and 2mL bottles are in clear glass. We do this consciously and for your convenience because they are easier to access the tiny amount of liquid inside. We also understand that these tiny amounts of oil are often used in a short time frame of which does not compromise the integrity of the therapeutic properties. While clear glass is not harmful to the oils themselves, it doesn’t protect them from sunlight, so do keep them in a medicine cabinet or away from any exposure to sunlight.

Tip: To reduce the chance of any dissatisfaction of an essential oil you may not like, we highly recommend you purchase sample sizes of oils you are not familiar with, or are in question of for its aroma and quality for your particular (chemical family) needs. Do you do purity testing of your oils?

What shipping options do you offer?

We ship all orders using USPS. International orders may request shipping through DHL.

When can I expect to receive my order?

How can I track my order?

You can track your order easily at You will receive a shipping confirmation email when your order is shipped. The confirmation email includes a tracking number, which can be checked at using the postal service’s “track and confirm” system.

Note: On occasion, the postal service does not scan boxes “in” when they are first received, and your order may not appear in their system until it is sorted through its first main transfer location. This may take 24 hours between the time you receive your order confirmation email, and the time the postal system has record of your package on its website. The “tracking number” will also serve as a delivery confirmation number, informing us that your package has been delivered.

How do I cancel or change an order?

All cancellations or changes to any order should be requested by 12:00 pm Mountain Time. Call us during business hours M-Th, 8:00am – 5:30pm MT at 303-440-3766 or toll free at 888-758-6360. Notifying us within these parameters can save you a 25% restocking fee which will be applied in instances where we have packed and shipped your order before receiving a notification.

We process orders on a first come, first served basis and most orders are shipped within 24 hours on business days.

What forms of payments do you take?

Do you ship internationally? What is the cost?

Yes, we do ship internationally. International shipping costs are calculated by the US Postal Service. You can expect to see a shipping charge anywhere from $10 – $50 depending on weight and location. Your total cost will be sent to you by email when we process your order. We make efforts to consciously pack your order safely in a small, flat rate box to help keep the shipping costs down. We also choose the most cost effective way to ship.

Note: At our discretion, we may require International Express for some orders based on contents, weight and cost to ensure we and you can track the order. You are required to purchase insurance for the amount of your order.

What is your return policy?

Our Return Policy (in brief): The Ananda Apothecary does not accept returns or offer refunds on any purchase unless it is damaged or defective. We can not accept any bottles that have been opened. Defective product is described as: damaged in shipping, broken or leaking bottles during shipping, or any product that is deemed to be compromised of its integrity from the shipping process. The customer is responsible for the shipping cost to return any oils or products. The Ananda Apothecary will pay the return shipping of some Diffusers according to our Return Policy on Diffusers set forth in our Return Policy.

How are your essential oils labeled?

We try to identify each oil clearly on it’s label for your most immediate reference. You’ll find each of our essential oils is labeled simply with their botanical binomial name (genus and species), country of origin, distillation method, and plant source (i.e. wildcrafted, organic, or natural.). Our facility has been certified by ECOCERT, so any and all of the organically certified oils that come into our facility are labeled with the USDA Organic Label and the EcoCert Label.

Do you offer samples?

Yes! We offer samples of every individual essential oil. We strongly encourage you to take advantage of this too. We do not, however, offer samples of blends. We trust you, the user to be familiar with the essential oils themselves such that the ingredients of the blends is satisfactory. You are welcome to purchase samples of our essential oils individually for your own quality testing. The amount of oil you’ll receive in a sample differs depending on the oil.

For example: Most samples are approximately .5mL. Samples of very costly oils range from 8-20 drops depending on the cost of the oil. The price of each sample varies.

Do you offer product support/protocol guidance?

We do our best to provide you with consummate information right here on our website. If you have specific questions pertaining to your personal condition, or how to use essential oils for yourself or another, it’s more appropriate for you to seek guidance and protocol support by a natural health professional in person. We offer what we Can… and abide by the law on what we Can Not provide for you. See more below.

WE CAN: assist you in describing what the “traditional” uses of the majority of the essential oils are, as well as what the latest scientific information is regarding the efficacy of certain oils for certain health conditions. For example, we can tell you that “Benchmark Thyme” essential oil has been shown highly effective in eradicating the MRSA bacteria, or that Melissa has been shown to be effective at treating herpes simplex outbreaks, or that the essential oils in the Super Immune blend all have research backing their anti-viral effects. We can also tell you how oils are often used for a wide variety of applications.

WE CANNOT:  give you a specific protocol for use of the oils for any serious medical condition, due to both liability issues, and that we’re not really the best source for you to get this information from.

Do you use environmentally friendly packaging?

Absolutely! We do our best to be conscious of our impact on the environment. You’ll notice that your invoice is printed on 100% recycled paper; our packing “wadding” paper is also 100% recycled; and we use starch packing “peanuts” which are completely biodegradable.

Do you include measuring pipettes with my order?

We do include pipettes with some sizes. In general, you’ll receive the 3mL, 5mL, and 10mL bottles with standard “orifice reducer” caps. We include with each 30mL and 60mL bottles of oil, both screw caps and a glass eye dropper top. It is strongly recommended NOT to store your oils with the eye dropper top for more than one week, as the essential oil will eventually deteriorate the rubber of the eye dropper. The dropper is included for your convenience for dispensing the oil.

The 120mL and 240mL bottles are in simple cobalt blue glass with a “polyseal” screw cap. We make every effort to supply a measuring pipette that is graduated to 3mL with each of these bottles to make dispensing easier. We DO recommend purchasing a set of these pipettes if you are creating blends with these larger amounts of oils, as they really make accurate blending a much simpler process.
